Director Arun Roy, Known For The Film Baghajatin Starring Dev, Has Passed Away

According to India Today, the renowned filmmaker died at the age of 56 on January 2nd in the early morning. After battling cancer for several years, Arun Roy recently developed a lung infection, leading to his hospitalization in Kolkata. Late Wednesday night, the hospital reported that his condition was deteriorating, and he was placed on ventilator support in the ICU. Sadly, the morning brought the news of his death.

Arun Roy, the director of the famous film Baghajatin, has succumbed to his battle with life. Despite undergoing his second chemotherapy treatment in September of the previous year, which showed some improvement, his weakened immune system led to a lung infection. This made his condition more complicated, resulting in a gradual decline in his health.

Actor Dev, who starred in Baghajatin, visited the hospital to check on the director’s condition. Along with his family, fans, and colleagues, there had been hopes for his recovery, but sadly, those hopes were not fulfilled.

The death of this distinguished filmmaker has left the Bengali film industry in mourning. Filmmaker Birsa Dasgupta expressed his grief on Facebook Thursday morning, saying, “This shouldn’t have happened, Arun Da.”

Actress Sudipta Chakraborty shared an emotional post, stating, “Director Arun Roy is no more. On the second morning of the New Year, he left us all. The Arun Da we knew will always remain in our hearts—his jokes, banter, watching films, and discussions.”

He further adds, “He had the courage to face even the toughest aspects of life with a smile. If only he had followed a bit of discipline and restraint!”

In 2011, director Arun Roy made his debut in the film industry with his first film Egaro. He later secured a special place in the hearts of audiences with his film Hiralal. This film also propelled actor-turned-doctor Kinjal Nandy to fame. Arun Roy had a deep love and passion for working on historical subjects, with one shining example being his direction of Binoy Badal Dinesh.

Arun Roy’s last film Baghajatin was also a major success, showcasing his skillful direction and profound affection for historical narratives. His research, creativity, and detailed analysis earned him a unique status in the film industry.

The death of Arun Roy has left an irreplaceable void in Bengali cinema. However, his creative works, bold vision, and memories will forever live on with us.
